Sputnik 1 – Space Race 1957 | Yvan Figueiras

Today we begin with the official start of the Space Race, the launch of Sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957, the event that changed history forever.

But first we will try to understand how the Soviets, who had barely gained access to Nazi missile technology, managed in a very short time and without outside help to surpass von Braun’s designs and his team from Peenemünde.

We will get to know the mysterious character of the «Chief Designer», the alias that hid the true identity of the great Sergei Korolyov, who would not be known in the West or in the Soviet Union itself until his death in 1966 and the process of creating his R-7, the first rocket to place an artificial object in orbit.

And of course, Sputnik. That glowing sphere with antennae that just beeped, but changed the world while creating widespread hysteria in the West.

Hoy comenzamos por el principio oficial de la Carrera Espacial, el lanzamiento de Sputnik 1 el 4 de octubre de 1957, aquel acontecimiento que cambió la Historia para siempre.

Pero antes trataremos de entender cómo los soviéticos, que apenas habían conseguido acceso a la tecnología de los misiles nazis, consiguieron en muy poco tiempo y sin ayuda exterior superar los diseños de von Braun y su equipo de Peenemünde.

Conoceremos la misteriosa figura del «Diseñador Jefe», el alias que ocultaba la verdadera identidad del genial Sergei Korolyov, que no sería conocida en Occidente ni en la propia Unión Soviética hasta su muerte en 1966 y el proceso de creación de su R-7, el primer cohete en situar un objeto artificial en órbita.

Y por supuesto, Sputnik. Esa esfera brillante con antenas que se limitaba a emitir pitidos, pero que cambió el mundo, creando al mismo tiempo una histeria generalizada en Occidente.

Apollo Lunar Mission (Part III) – from the Moon to the Earth | Yvan Figueiras

We have reached the Moon! Now it’s time to get out of the ship and explore. Or as they say in jargon: extravehicular activity. We’ll take some samples, plant the flag (yes, the one that does NOT wave) and do a little science.

Missions 15 to 17 carried a lunar rover, which allowed them to expand their exploration radius; We will see how such a curious vehicle worked. After finishing our activity, we just have to pack up our gear, do some last minute science… and return to Earth.

We will learn what it was like to take off from the Moon, the rendezvous in orbit with the Command and Service Module (CSM) and the return trip. To round it off, the infernal re-entry, the splashdown… and the ticker tape parade.

Now that we have seen the end, next week we will start at the beginning: Sputnik.

Misión Lunar Apollo (Parte III): de la Luna a la Tierra | Yvan Figueiras

¡Hemos llegado a la Luna! Ahora es el momento de salir de la nave y explorar. O como se dice en jerga: de actividad extravehicular. Tomaremos unas muestras, plantaremos la bandera (sí esa que NO ondea) y haremos un poco de ciencia.

Las misiones del 15 al 17 transportaban un rover lunar, que les permitió ampliar su radio de exploración; veremos qué tal funcionaba tan curioso vehículo. Tras finalizar nuestra actividad, sólo nos queda recoger los bártulos, hacer un poco de ciencia de última hora… y volver a la Tierra.

Aprenderemos cómo era el despegue de la Luna, el encuentro en órbita con el Módulo de Mando y Servicio (CSM) y el viaje de vuelta. Como colofón la infernal reentrada, el amerizaje… y el desfile de papelinas.

Ahora que ya hemos visto el final, la semana que viene comenzaremos por el principio: Sputnik.

Apollo Lunar Mission (Part II) – from the orbit to the Moon | Yvan Figueiras

The second part of our example mission to the Moon begins in parking orbit around the Earth. From there we will carry out the Translunar Injection, which will take us –if all goes well– to the far side of our satellite.

Along the way we will learn the different maneuvers and procedures used by astronauts and Mission Control, while understanding some of the jargon of this type of business.

All that remains is to start the descent, land on the moon, plant the flag and say a few words, but we will leave the latter for the last chapter of the series.

We hope you enjoy these more than 300,000 km of flight. Remember that if you want to subscribe you have to pet the cat…

Misión Lunar Apollo (Parte II): de la Órbita a la Luna | Yvan Figueiras

La segunda parte de nuestra misión ejemplo a la Luna comienza en la órbita de aparcamiento alrededor de la Tierra. Desde allí llevaremos a cabo la Inyección Translunar, que nos llevará –si todo sale bien–hasta la cara oculta de nuestro satélite.

Por el camino iremos aprendiendo las diferentes maniobras y procedimientos empleados por los astronautas y el Control de Misión, comprendiendo al mismo tiempo algo de la jerga de este tipo de negocio.

Sólo falta iniciar el descenso, tomar tierra (con minúscula), plantar la bandera y decir unas palabras, pero esto último lo vamos a dejar para el último capítulo de la serie.

Esperamos que disfrutes de estos más de 300.000 Km de vuelo. Recuerda que si quieres suscribirte hay que acariciar al gato…

With images obtained from NASA and through 3D animations we have tried to recreate a complete Apollo lunar mission, using various moments of each real mission, from the ill-fated Apollo 1, to the last to reach our satellite, Apollo 17.

This video is the prologue to our new series on the space race. Only that in order to better understand that piece of our History we have preferred to start at the end, so we can clearly see what the goal really was.

Con imágenes obtenidas de NASA y mediante animaciones 3D hemos tratado de recrear una misión lunar Apollo completa, empleando diversos momentos de cada misión real, desde el malogrado Apollo 1, hasta el último en llegar a nuestro satélite, Apollo 17.

Este vídeo es el prólogo a nuestra nueva serie sobre la carrera espacial. Sólo que para poder comprender mejor ese pedazo de nuestra Historia hemos preferido comenzar por el final, para entender mejor así cuál era realmente la meta.
